The Women of Team USA prevail against all-time rival Team Canada to bring back the glorious gold medal from the 2023 IIHF Women’s World Championship, held in enemy territory… Brampton, Ontario.
This victory marks Team USA’s 10th gold medal victory and their 22nd gold medal game appearance officially making it to every title game in the history of IIHF Women’s World Championship.
The two teams have a colorful history being the 21st time they have competed against one another for the gold. Team U.S. now holds an all-time record of 13-4-7-10 (W-OTW-OTL-L) against Team Canada in the Women’s World Championship. During the preliminary finals Amanda Kressel scored the tying point, 3-3, against the Canadians who did come back to win 4-3 in a shootout.
Fortunately in this matchup the women were able to make it up when it counted after Caroline Harvey, from Salem, N.H., was able to score the tying point at 5:40 of the third period.
The last few minutes were the most exciting of all for the Americans scoring three goals within 1:12 seconds of game time. Team Captain Hilary Knight earned her title as Team USA’s Player of the Game after finishing the game with a hat trick, scoring 3 points, and scoring her 100th and 101st goal, being the first woman to reach such a goal in Women’s World History.
Another honorable mention would be Head Coach John Wroblewski is now the first head coach in USA Hockey to ever lead a women’s and men’s team to national victory, 2023 Women’s World Championship and 2017 U-18 Men’s World Championship (quite the resume statistic to add)
Congratulations to the women and staff of Team USA Hockey!
