Big news in the world of sports collectors and fans of women’s sports, last week Athletes Unlimited (AU) and Topps released a trading card set that showcases all four of the AU sports; basketball, lacrosse, softball, and volleyball!
The 200 card set highlights 185 athletes and is being sold through Topps and Fanatics, its parent company. The set will also be sold to different retailers such as Target and Barnes & Noble. In addition to the box set a few different themed sets will be available as well with autographed offerings from 85 of these athletes and certain cards with set in pieces of memorabilia.
Partnerships like this are so important to the growth of women’s sports as it shows the confidence of so many others within the sporting community and how they want to memorialize these talented athletes.
Sports trading cards have always been a way to further involve fans in a team and league and this step by Topps and AU shows the ways they want to bring in new and current fans.
It's a way to continue building communities in sports and within franchises so this is a great step for both organizations.
Womens sports trading cards have been taking the stage in recent years with leagues such as the NWSL also renewing their trading card deal in 2021 with Parkside Collectibles.
Last March a Serena Williams’ 2003 Netpro International Series Apparel Autograph featuring an autograph and match-worn apparel for Serena Williams sold for $120,000.
Breaking the previous record held by Serena Williams, which broke the previous record also held by her..
In February this year a Sabrina Ionescu 2020 Panini Prizm WNBA Black Gold rookie card sold for a whopping $10,800 which makes it the highest amount paid for a WNBA trading card and the first ever to sell for five figures.
So it definitely sounds like we need to start stocking up on these cards, better go catch them all while you still can!
Hopefully next up we can get some more bobbleheads thrown in the mix.
